Glass mosaic tiles can be used to create shimmering wall tile designs. Glass tiles turn ordinary tile patterns and designs into works of art.

As glass tiles and mosaic wallpaper patterns grow in popularity, it seems only natural that the next step will be fusing the two. By using pieces of glass mosaic in a rainbow of colors and multiple sizes, mosaic wallpaper patterns and glass wall tile designs take on new depth and color.

Glass Mosaic Tiles

The glass used in mosaic patterns and mosaic wallpaper is subtly different from standard glass tiles. Depending on the type of pattern being produced, two different types of glass can be used.

If creating a repeating, geometric pattern, square glass tiles varying shades and colors can be pieced together to create the pattern. This glass will be solid in color, with the color going straight through the glass, and can have an iridescent finish, or a slightly textured finish. Oftentimes, recycled glass tiles will be used.

For more intricate patterns, such as murals or pictures created in mosaic, a different type of glass must be used. One of the leading manufacturers of mosaic tiles and mosaic patterns, New Ravenna, has created a line of glass well suited to this purpose. Called Jewel Glass, the collection is inspired by Tiffany art glass and is created in three widths to allow the artists greater control over the design.

Jewel like tones, and rich vibrant colors are fused together to create glass pieces that have a depth all their own. Pieced together they create not just standard tile patterns and designs, they create intricate glass murals and art designs.

The Use of Decorative Glass Murals and Patterns

Decorative glass patterns and murals can be used on any wall or vertical surface. To highlight and enhance their beauty and design, try using them in prominent places in the home.

Some installation recommendations are:

  • Framed behind the cooktop of the kitchen backsplash
  • As a framed accent panel on the back of a walk in shower
  • As an accent wall behind a whirlpool tub in a master bathroom
  • As an accent wall behind the sink in a powder room
  • In a scrolling design which frames a mirror or recessed medicine cabinet
  • As mosaic wallpaper surrounding a fireplace

Complimentary Materials

To enhance the use of a glass mosaic tile mural or pattern, try setting off the design with complimentary materials. For a kitchen backsplash, try using a matte tile of either honed stone, or ceramic along the counters. Frame the mural behind the stove in a chairrail of the same material as the field. This will set off the glass and allow it to be the focus by being the only area catching and reflecting light.

If using glass mosaics as an accent wall in a bathroom, compliment the look by using a large format tile on the bathroom floor. The contrast in sizes will draw the eye to the sparking glass tiles without overwhelming the bathroom design.

Frame a panel in a shower with ceramic tiles of a similar color. Try using ceramic tiles which have a wash of color over them, rather than tiles with a solid color to soften the effect.

Decorative glass tiles, as well as mosaics, have been used for centuries to enhance and beautify homes. Bring these timeless materials together in a modern pattern and use and watch the glass reflect the past, present and future of the home’s design.
